B&B Team Reaches Summit Pico De Orizaba

VALENCIA, CA—B&B Manufacturing, a world-class provider of manufacturing solutions to the aerospace, military and automotive industries, took team building to a lofty new level as two of their top executives reached Summit Pico De Orizaba.

In scaling the summit, B&B vice president Jeff Lage and Engineering Manager Ken Curtis faced the daunting challenge of extreme altitude (climbing above 18,000 feet)--recognized by mountain medicine for its significantly lowered amount of oxygen in the atmosphere.
Accompanying the B&B team was OSP buyer Victor Zaragoza. Although he did not reach the summit, this was his first high-elevation hike and he did successfully reach the 15,000-foot level.
Pico de Orizaba is 62 miles from the shores of the Gulf of Mexico and 120 miles east of Mexico City. Known as a stratovolcano, it is the highest mountain in Mexico and the third highest in North America. It rises 18,491 feet above sea level in the eastern end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, on the border between the states of Veracruz and Puebla. Currently dormant but not extinct, the volcano last erupted during the 19th century.
The second most prominent volcanic peak in the world after Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro, Pico de Orizaba’s climate varies greatly due to the change of elevation and prevailing winds. The latitude and its extreme rugged terrain cause the volcano to experience many microclimates.Atelevations between 10,500 and 14,100 feet, temperatures usually hover from 36 to 41 °F and a continental sub-arctic climate predominates. At 14,100 feet, the annual average low falls to 28 °F with heavy snowfalls, and blizzards are common throughout the year. Snow on the south and southeast melts due to solar radiation, but snow continually remains on the north and northwestern faces, which keeps them extremely cold.
Kudos to the B&B team and to Victor Zaragoza, all of whom met this challenge with conviction and courage.
